DoorJammer Lockdown - the portable security device for schools and colleges

Once upon a time we would have looked upon this situation with confusion, why on earth would a school or college need to utilise personal protection devices in classrooms and to lockdown the establishment?

In today’s world however, student and teacher safety in education establishments is a very real concern - the recent attack on a teacher in Paris is just one such example. Whilst in the UK serious security incidents in schools and colleges remain relatively rare, they do still occur, the Dunblaine school shooting in 1996 for example, is still referred to as the deadliest mass shooting in UK history.

Schools have a legal requirement to consider and prepare for a serious incident occurring

In a rapidly changing world where security threats are becoming more prevalent and diverse, UK law insists that security arrangements, policies and plans must be in place to protect the students and visitors on school and college premises should there be a threat of attack.

British health and safety law (HASAWA) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requires employers to take a common sense and proportionate approach to identify, assess and keep under review health and safety related risks and take steps to reduce or eliminate those risks. This includes security risks where there is a threat of attack on staff and students such as one involving a student with an offensive weapon, an unwanted or aggressive intruder or a terrorist attack on the premises.

Shouldn’t we evacuate, not lockdown?

Government security officials advise against evacuation in most cases unless the exact location of the intruder(s) is known.

“It is important to remember that it is very much the exception to evacuate a building in the event of a hostile intruder. Unless the location of the intruders is known, a "blind" evacuation may be putting people in more danger (e.g. from an intruder or device at one of the entrances/exits) than if they had remained within the building.”

DoorJammer Lockdown is the award-winning and police accredited door security device that can prevent unwanted entry to any room you are in and fast - any room can become a safe space. DoorJammer’s patented steel design allows use on almost any door, even without a lock or handle.

The device installs quickly and simply with the turn of a hand screw, both adults and children can easily install DoorJammer Lockdown to create a barricade. The flat part of DoorJammer inserts all the way under the door below the handle (or where the handle would be). The hand screw is twisted clockwise until the foot is firm against the floor.

How is DoorJammer used in a lockdown scenario?

DoorJammer Lockdown is used to create a safe space by barricading any inward opening door, such as one into a class or lecture room. DoorJammer’s quality construction and patented design redirects force from outside of the door downwards and upwards, wedging DoorJammer firmly into the doorframe, the ground and the surrounding wall.

The government provides the following 10 step recommended lockdown template procedure on their website:

  1. Sound Alert - Activate lock-down procedures immediately. Dial 999.

  2. Direct all children, staff, parents and signed in visitors to the nearest safe place (this may be dependent on what and where the risk is).

  3. Secure rooms and take action to increase protection from attack - Lock and barricade doors and windows.

  4. Close windows / blinds.

  5. Turn off the lights, fans or mobile air conditioning units (this will reduce noise and the risk of exposure to any chemical / biological attack).

  6. Hide, sit on the floor under desks, and away from windows.

  7. Stay as silent as possible - put any mobile devices to silent (consider writing / displaying instructions on whiteboards / TV's etc, as long as it can’t be seen by the intruder).

  8. Ensure that students, staff and visitors are aware of an exit point in case the intruder does manage to gain access.

  9. If possible, check for missing / injured students, staff and visitors.

  10. Keep doors and windows locked shut and remain inside until an all-clear has been given, or unless told to evacuate by the emergency services.

When the all clear has been given and it is safe to do so, simply pull the handle upward and DoorJammer Lockdown will quickly lift away.
